Where Surmount New York Started

As a newly established nonprofit that launched in January 2024, Surmount New York had a mission to raise awareness about available community resources, with a particular focus on food security. However, operating without a physical office and with a remote team across New York City and surrounding areas, the organization faced several operational hurdles.

They lacked an efficient way to manage donations, track expenses, and provide financial access to volunteers across multiple locations. The organization received its first substantial grant early on but quickly realized they needed a more streamlined solution to manage these funds, track project-specific expenses, and ensure smooth financial operations for their growing initiatives

In addition to these larger concerns, Surmount New York faced common nonprofit challenges:

  • Establishing banking services without the time-consuming process of visiting physical bank branches
  • Providing financial access to volunteers and team members in different locations
  • Tracking project-specific expenses separately from general operations
  • Creating a simple donation collection system for various initiatives
  • Implementing a user-friendly solution that even non-tech-savvy volunteers could navigate

Surmount New York needed a solution to manage their finances and operations in a way that was seamless, efficient, and accessible for their diverse team.

Finding the Right Financial Management Solution For Growing Nonprofits

When researching banking options, Elijah discovered Crowded through online reviews of nonprofit platforms. After exploring several alternatives including local banks, they chose Crowded because of its:

  • Simple onboarding process
  • User-friendly interface
  • Digital + physical card capabilities
  • Donation collection feature
  • Remote accessibility

I like things that are really accessible, easy to use and user friendly because volunteers coming in aren't so tech saavy. So I definitely prioritize platforms that are user friendly.

How Crowded Helped Surmount New York Simplify Financial Management

As Surmount New York grows, they plan to continue leveraging Crowded’s features to support their expanding initiatives:

  • Creating separate collection pages for new programs as they develop

  • Exploring compliance features as they approach filing requirements for Form 990

  • Supporting their upcoming table events around New York City

Of all the platforms I looked at, Crowded was one of the most simple, even compared to some of the more local banks. So it was kind of a no-brainer when I started playing around with it.
